Videngine vs Canva: the short answer
Videngine is a Canva video alternative for one job: making many narrated, captioned videos from web pages, listings, products, articles or rows of data, in batches. Canva is a design and video editor where you build each video by hand from a template, with stock footage, music, captions and AI tools. Choose Canva for one-off designed videos and social graphics. Choose Videngine when every page or row needs its own video.
Deciding quickly. If someone on your team will open and shape each video, use Canva. If there are hundreds and each follows the same pattern, that’s the job Videngine is built for.
What each one is
Canva is an editor you work in; Videngine is an engine that works from your sources.
Canva
Canva is a browser-based design platform for social graphics, presentations, print and video. Its online video editor, which Canva also presents as a video maker, has a multi-layer, drag-and-drop timeline for trimming, splitting and layering clips, animations and transitions, one-click captions and a video background remover. Pro adds premium stock footage, automatic Beat Sync and Magic Resize for other aspect ratios.
Its AI tools include Magic Video, which builds an edit from clips you drop in and a short prompt, Highlights, Image to Video and an AI video generator for new clips. Text to speech turns up to 2,000 characters of script into a voiceover. Videos download as MP4 or GIF, or go straight to Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and other networks. There is a free plan.
Videngine
Videngine is a programmatic video engine, built and run by Wall & Fifth. It turns a web page, a listing, a product, an article or a row of CSV or JSON data into a finished, narrated, captioned MP4. It writes the script, records the narration, transcribes captions from that audio and renders scenes from templates written as code, with your typefaces, colours and logo set once.
The pictures come from the source: the page’s own photos, product images or assets you supply. There is no generated footage, no stock library and no timeline, and each video is reviewed before it goes out. Videngine is launching soon; plans start at $79 a month.
Side by side
The main difference is who builds each video: a person in Canva’s editor, or the engine in Videngine.
| Feature | Canva | Videngine |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Designing graphics, documents and videos by hand | Narrated videos from pages and data, many at a time, each reviewed |
| Starting price | Free plan; Pro US$144 a year for one person; Business US$250 a year per person | $79 a month for 50 finished videos (launching soon); no free plan |
| Billing unit | Per person; AI features draw on a usage allowance that grows by plan | Finished videos up to 2 minutes; re-rendering the same video in the same month is free |
| How a video is made | You build it in the editor: template, clips, text, music, voiceover, timing | Reads the page or data row, writes the script and renders its pictures into your coded template |
| Many videos from data | Bulk Create fills text and image fields from a CSV, XLSX file or Canva Sheet | Batch runs from a CSV or JSON file on Growth and above; pages can be picked from a sitemap |
| Script | Written by you; Magic Write can draft text | Written from each source, with your banned phrases and target length, or your own |
| Voice | Text to speech, up to 2,000 characters at a time, in many languages; or record your own | House voice, other synthetic voices or your own audio, with a pronunciation lexicon; English only |
| Captions | Generated in one click and styled in the editor | Transcribed from the finished audio; burned in or as an .srt file, plus WebVTT for your website |
| Footage | 141M+ premium photos, videos, graphics and audio on Pro; AI-generated clips | None: the pictures come from your source or your own assets |
| Brand control | Brand Kits: 1 on Free (three colours), 5 on Pro, 100 with approvals on Business | Typefaces, colours, logo, safe areas and motion set once as tokens in the template code |
| Output | MP4 or GIF; up to 4K on Pro; other sizes with Magic Resize on Pro | MP4 or WebM up to 1080p; 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 and 4:5 from the same source |
| Publishing | Share to social networks; social content scheduling on Pro | Download, Google Drive, a connected YouTube channel, or a commit to a static site’s GitHub repository |
| Best at | One-off designed videos and social graphics, edited by hand | The same kind of video for every page, product or row |
Can Canva’s Bulk Create make videos?
Partly: Bulk Create fills a template’s text and image placeholders from rows of data, and videos in the generated designs stay playable, but Canva’s help pages don’t describe giving each row its own script or voiceover.
Canva’s help centre says:
- It’s available on Pro, Teams, Business, Enterprise, Education and Nonprofits plans, on desktop only.
- Data comes from a CSV or XLSX file, Canva Sheets, data apps such as HubSpot, or a table typed into Canva.
- You connect up to 150 data fields to elements in the design: a separate text box for each text field, and frames or grids for images.
- Images have to be uploaded to Canva or embedded in the spreadsheet cell. Image links in the data are treated as plain text, so a product feed’s photo URLs won’t bring the photos in.
- The result is either one multi-page design or one design per row, grouped in a new folder in Projects. Videos show as a frozen first frame in the preview; the generated designs include them as playable video.
Two more details matter. Canva can download a multi-page design’s pages as separate MP4 files, but not for video design types, which use one continuous timeline; there, its help centre says to make a separate design per video. And Canva’s autofill API fills brand templates with text and images; its documentation says video assets aren’t supported.
None of these pages covers what makes a narrated video: a script for each row, a voiceover from it, and captions and timings that follow that voice. As Canva describes them, those are editor steps, one video at a time. Bulk Create suits social clips with swapped text and photos; a narrated video per product is more work.
What does 250 videos a month look like?
In Canva, 250 narrated videos means finishing each one in the editor; in Videngine, it means one batch run, then reviewing 250 finished videos.
Take a shop that wants a narrated video for each of 250 products, in a vertical cut for short-form video and a landscape cut for the product page, much like video ads made from product pages.
| Step | Canva | Videngine |
|---|---|---|
| Get the material in | Upload the photos; Bulk Create can fill text and image fields from a spreadsheet | Pick pages from the sitemap, or upload a CSV or JSON file |
| Script | Write one for each product, or draft with Magic Write and edit | Written for each product with a timed scene plan; accept it, edit a line or supply your own |
| Voice | Generate text to speech from each script, or record it | Recorded for every video in the batch, using your pronunciation lexicon |
| Captions and timing | Generate captions, then fit scenes to each voiceover | Captions from the finished audio; scenes timed to the script |
| Second size | Magic Resize on Pro, then check each layout | 9:16 and 16:9 cuts from the same source; each photo framed for the format |
| Export and publish | Download each video as MP4, or share to social networks | Approve, then download, send to Google Drive, queue to YouTube or publish to the product page |
| What grows with volume | Editing time | Review time |
In Videngine, the same month runs like this:
- Set the brand template up once: typefaces, colours, logo, safe areas and motion.
- Choose the 250 product pages from the sitemap, or upload a CSV or JSON file with one row per product.
- Start the batch. Each page or row becomes one video, queued and rendered unattended; a one-minute 1080p video typically renders in a few minutes.
- Review each video in the studio. Change a script line and render again if needed; the rebuild is saved as a new version beside the original.
- Deliver the approved videos: download them, send them to a Google Drive folder you own, queue them to YouTube or, on a static site, publish each one into the page it was made from.
The subscription is small. The cost that grows is time: each of the 250 videos is scripted, voiced, timed and exported by a person. Business is US$250 a year per person if several people share the work.
250 finished videos, with the script, voice, captions and batch runs included. Re-rendering the same video in the same month is free. Your time goes on review. See all plans.
Which should you choose?
Canva is the better choice for one-off designed videos, social graphics and teams who want to edit by hand; Videngine is the better choice when the same kind of video has to exist for every page, product or row.
Choose Canva if
- You make a few videos at a time and want to shape each one
- You also need social graphics, presentations and print
- You want stock footage, music or AI-generated clips
- Your team likes a timeline: trim, layer, animate
- You need a free plan, 4K export or narration in other languages
Choose Videngine if
- Every page, product, listing or row needs its own narrated video
- The pictures must come from the source, not stock
- Names must be pronounced correctly and banned phrases kept out
- You want vertical and landscape cuts without rebuilding anything
- Videos should go to YouTube or into the page they were made from
Questions
Is Videngine a Canva video alternative?
For making many narrated videos from web pages, listings, products or data, yes. For designing a single video by hand, with stock footage, music and animation, no: Canva’s editor is built for that and Videngine has no timeline. Many teams will use both.
Can Canva bulk create videos?
Canva’s Bulk Create fills a template’s text and image fields from a CSV, XLSX file or Canva Sheet, producing one design per row or one multi-page design. Video clips already in the template stay playable. Canva’s help pages don’t describe connecting a separate script or voiceover to each row, so narration is still added in the editor.
Is the Canva video editor free?
Yes, with limits. Canva says free accounts can export videos without a watermark as long as they use only free elements, and free MP4 downloads run up to 30 minutes at up to 1080p. On Pro, paid elements export without a watermark and MP4s can run up to 2 hours at up to 4K.
Which is cheaper for 250 videos a month?
On subscription price, Canva: Pro is US$144 a year for one person. Videngine’s Growth plan is $249 a month for 250 finished videos, with script, voice and captions included. The difference is the hours: in Canva someone builds each video, in Videngine someone reviews each one.
Can Videngine edit videos like Canva?
No. Videngine has no timeline editor. You change a video by editing its script, its source data or the template, then rendering again, and the rebuild is saved as a new version beside the original.
