Videngine or Shotstack?
Choose Shotstack if you’re a developer building video into your own product and want low per-minute rendering, 4K output and delivery to your own storage. Choose Videngine if you want narrated videos from your pages, products, listings or data without writing the code that turns them into scripts, voices, captions and reviewed renders.
Deciding quickly. If you’re writing code, Shotstack is a strong engine to build on. If you’d rather not, Videngine has already built that pipeline.
What each one is
Shotstack
Shotstack is a cloud video editing API. You describe an edit in JSON, as tracks, clips and output settings, and post it to be rendered, or save it as a template with merge fields that you fill for each video. Around that it offers a browser template editor called Studio, an AI agent that builds edits from chat, SDKs for Node, Python, PHP and Ruby, and hosting on its CDN or delivery to S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure, Google Drive or Vimeo.
Videngine
Videngine is a programmatic video engine, built and run by Wall & Fifth. Give it a web page, a listing, a product, an article or a row of CSV or JSON data and it writes the script, applies your pronunciation and phrasing rules, records the narration, transcribes captions from that audio and renders the source’s own photos, or images you supply, into scene templates written as code, with your brand set once.
Each video is reviewed in the studio before it goes out. For a static site kept in GitHub, Publish makes one commit that adds the MP4, a poster and a WebVTT caption track, and writes a player, a transcript and VideoObject markup into the page the video came from. Videos can also be downloaded, sent to a Google Drive folder you own or published to a connected YouTube channel. Videngine is launching soon; plans start at $79 a month.

What 250 videos a month costs
A retailer adding video to every new product, a publisher to every article or a dealer group to every listing might make 250 one-minute videos a month. Here’s what that looks like on each.
250 one-minute videos fit Starter’s 250 minutes. That’s rendering only: AI voice uses credits, and scripts, the data loop and review are yours to build.
250 finished videos, with the script, voice, captions and batch runs included. Re-renders of the same video are free.
Which should you choose?
Choose Shotstack if
- You’re a developer building video into your own app
- You need 4K, ProRes with alpha or chroma key
- Videos should be hosted on a CDN or sent to your own storage
- The lowest cost per rendered minute matters most
- You want a white-label editor for your own users
Choose Videngine if
- You’d rather not write and maintain rendering code
- Scripts should be written from each page or row, with your pronunciation rules
- A person reviews each video before it goes live
- You want script, voice and captions in one price per video
- Approved videos should go into your own site’s pages, with captions and VideoObject markup
Questions
Is Videngine a Shotstack alternative?
For narrated videos from pages, products, listings or data, yes, if you don’t want to build the pipeline yourself. If you’re building video features into your own software, Shotstack is infrastructure and Videngine isn’t trying to be.
Is Shotstack cheaper?
For rendering alone, yes: 250 minutes a month is $39 on Starter. Videngine’s Growth plan is $249 for 250 finished videos, including the script, voice, captions, review studio and batch runs. The real comparison is that $249 against $39 plus the engineering time to build the rest.
Can Shotstack render videos from a CSV?
Not in a single request. Shotstack’s own guide explains that you read the CSV in your own code and send one render per row.
Can I use both?
Yes. Teams with a product to build on often use an API like Shotstack for in-app video and Videngine for product, listing and marketing videos that need a reviewed script and voice.
